Turn a long YouTube lecture into an Arabic or English study guide
Paste a lecture link into Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) and get a structured study guide in the language you study in: sections in lecture order, key terms, worked examples, likely exam questions and flashcards you can import.
Steps
- Open the lecture on YouTube and check it has captions (the CC button); Gemini Notebook reads the transcript, not the video, so a lecture with no captions will not work. Copy the link.
- Go to Gemini Notebook, create a notebook, choose Add source → YouTube and paste the link. If you have the slides or the chapter PDF, add them as sources too; the guide gets much better when it can cite both.
- Paste the prompt below into the chat and set the language. For an English lecture you study in Arabic, ask for key terms in both languages so the exam wording still matches.
- Click the citation numbers in the answer to read the transcript lines behind each point, and fix anything the auto-captions misheard (names, formulas and numbers are the usual victims).
- Save the answer as a note, then use the Studio panel to generate the built-in study guide, flashcards and quiz from the same sources, and an Audio Overview if you learn better by listening.
- Copy the Front;Back lines into Quizlet’s import box with “;” as the separator, or into any flashcard app. Study, then come back and ask the notebook for 10 more questions on the parts you got wrong.
Prompt
Replace anything in { } with your details.
You are my study assistant. Use ONLY the sources in this notebook. Write everything in {LANGUAGE}.
1. STUDY GUIDE: sections in the order of the lecture, each with a 3-5 line summary and the timestamp or page it comes from.
2. KEY TERMS: the 15 most important terms with a one-line definition{, in both Arabic and English}.
3. WORKED EXAMPLES: every example or calculation the lecturer did, step by step.
4. LIKELY EXAM QUESTIONS: 8 questions with short model answers, based on what the lecturer stressed or repeated.
5. FLASHCARDS: 20 lines in the format Front;Back (no numbering, no extra text).
If something is not in the sources, say "not in the sources" instead of guessing. Expected output
A study guide in lecture order with citations, a bilingual glossary, the worked examples, 8 likely exam questions with answers and 20 import-ready flashcards, plus the notebook’s own audio overview and quiz if you want them.
Gotchas
- ⚠ Auto-generated captions are the weak link: a lecture with a heavy accent, lots of formulas or mixed Arabic and English needs more checking.
- ⚠ Very long videos (3 hours and more) can hit source limits; split by chapter or add the slides so the notebook has clean text to lean on.
- ⚠ Private videos cannot be added; the video needs to be viewable by anyone with the link and have captions.
- ⚠ The free plan has standard limits (up to 50 sources per notebook), which is plenty for one course.
- ⚠ The guide is only as good as the lecture: it will not add what the lecturer skipped, so cross-check with the textbook before the exam.
